解説 Definition
本来は距離を置くべき相手と、友人のように親しく付き合うこと。しばしば非難を含む。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
fraternity「友愛・兄弟関係」と同じfrater系の語なので、「兄弟のように親しく交わる」を核に覚えます。ただし現代のfraternizeは、敵軍、競争相手、上司と部下、教師と学生など、本来は一定の距離を保つべき相手と親しくする場面で、非難や警戒を帯びがちです。fraternize with the enemyが代表形で、withを伴うと押さえましょう。単なるsocializeより、「立場上その親交は不適切では」という含みが強い語です。
Connect the word with fraternity and its idea of brotherly friendship. Picture someone treating an enemy like a brother despite being expected to keep their distance. Remember 'fraternize with the enemy,' including the preposition with.
例文
The captain says, 'Do not fraternize with the enemy.'
隊長は「敵と親しくするな」と言う。
Teachers should not fraternize with their students.
教師は生徒と友達のように親しくするべきではない。
His teammates dislike it when he fraternizes with the other team.
彼が相手チームの選手たちと親しくするのを、チームメートは嫌がっている。

fraternize の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 frater「兄弟」をもとにした fraternity「兄弟関係、友愛」と同系で、英語の動詞接尾辞 -ize「〜にする」が付いた語です。もとは「兄弟のように親しくする」という意味で、のちに敵や部下などとの不適切な交際にも使われるようになりました。
Related to fraternity through Latin frater, meaning 'brother,' and formed with the verb suffix -ize. The original idea of behaving like brothers later extended to inappropriate friendly relations with enemies or subordinates.
