使い方 Usage

  • belittling + 人・仕事・懸念などの形で対象を直接続けます。進行形では is belittling のように使います。 Put the target directly after belittling, such as a person, their work, or their concerns. In the progressive, use a form such as is belittling.

使い分け Common distinctions

  • criticism は建設的な批判にも使えますが、belittling は人や努力の価値を低く扱う否定的な行為を表します。 Criticism can be constructive, whereas belittling describes the negative act of dismissing a person's worth or the value of their efforts.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

belittle の little「小さい」から、相手の価値を小さく扱うイメージで覚えます。-ing を付けるときは語末の e を落として belittling と綴ります。

Connect little in belittle with making someone or something seem less valuable or important. Drop the final e before adding -ing to spell belittling.

belittling の語源・成り立ち Etymology

belittlingはbe-(~にする)+little(小さい)から成る動詞belittleの現在分詞。トマス・ジェファーソンが1780年代に造語した米語。関連語はlittle、belittle。「相手を小さく見せる=軽んじる」という直感的な構造を持つ。

Belittling is the -ing form of belittle, built transparently from be- and little. The verb means, in effect, to make a person or thing seem little in importance, worth, or ability. Belittle was coined in American English and is associated with Thomas Jefferson’s use of it in the 1780s. It later became an established verb despite early criticism from some British commentators. The final silent e is dropped before -ing is added.
