海の生き物を表す語は、泳ぎ回るものなら pelagic（外洋の）、底にすむものなら benthic、という対比で覚えると定着しやすいです。研究文脈では benthic organisms, benthic zone, benthic community の形でよく出ます。-ic は「〜に関する」という形容詞語尾なので、まず benth- を見たら「海底側の話だな」と反応できるようにするとよいです。planktonic など他の生態学用語と並べて覚えると混同しにくくなります。
Remember it by contrast: `pelagic` is about the open sea, but `benthic` is about the bottom. When you see `benthic zone` or `benthic organisms`, think "sea-floor side." The `-ic` ending also tells you it is an adjective.
