boarder は board + -er で、board は古英語 bord「板・食卓」に由来します。room and board や boarding school も同じ board で、もとは『同じ食卓につく人』から食事つきの下宿人を指すようになりました。
Boarder comes from board plus -er, with board from Old English bord meaning "plank" or "table." In English, board also came to mean meals provided at a table, as in room and board. So a boarder was first someone who ate at the table, and then someone who lived where meals were included.
