Bolshevik entered English from Russian bolshevik, literally a member of the bolshinstvo, or “majority.” Both words are related to bolshoy, meaning “big” or “great.” The label arose during the 1903 split in the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, when Lenin’s faction won certain key votes and became known as the majority faction. Its counterpart was Menshevik, derived from the Russian word for “minority.” The names remained even when actual voting strength later changed.
