duressは古フランス語duresse「厳しさ・硬さ」からで、さらにラテン語durus「硬い」にさかのぼります。dur-は「硬くてゆるがない」が核なので、物の硬さから人にかかる厳しい圧力へ意味が移り、「強迫」になりました。durableやendureも同じ根です。
Duress comes from Old French duresse, from Latin durus, meaning "hard." The core idea was physical hardness or harshness. That sense later shifted to severe pressure on a person, giving the modern idea of compulsion; durable and endure come from the same root.
