bonanza は英語にスペイン語 bonanza「凪、好運」として入り、さらに中世ラテン語 bonacia、ラテン語 malacia、ギリシャ語 malakia「やわらかさ」にさかのぼります。海がやわらかく穏やかだという感覚から「順風満帆」、さらに「大当たり」へ伸びた語で、同根語に malacia、malacology があります。
Bonanza came into English from Spanish `bonanza`, which first meant calm seas and then good fortune. It goes back through Medieval Latin to Greek `malakia`, meaning softness. The idea was that the sea became soft and gentle, then the meaning widened to a smooth run of luck, and later to a rich strike or sudden success. A distant related word is `malacology`.
