古フランス語 branche（枝）からの英語 branch に過去分詞接尾辞 -ed が付いた形。さらに遡ると後期ラテン語 branca（動物の足・爪）が語源で、枝分かれした足の形から「枝」の意に転じた。関連語に branch（枝）、ramification（分岐・影響）がある。
