Briton came through Anglo-French Bretun from Latin Britto or Brittonem, a name for an inhabitant of Britain. The Latin ethnonym corresponds to ancient Greek forms used for the peoples of the British Isles. A proposed connection with words referring to painting or tattooing is often mentioned, but the ultimate origin remains uncertain. The historical ethnic name later developed the broader modern sense “a person from Britain.”
