Bronx はニューヨークの地名で、17世紀の入植者 Jonas Bronck の姓に由来する。もとは「Bronck's land」が縮まった形で、関連語に Bronxville や Bronx River があり、人名が土地名化して『ブロンクス』になった。
The place name is associated with Jonas Bronck, a seventeenth-century settler who owned land near the river now called the Bronx River. Expressions referring to Bronck's land or the Bronck's River eventually developed into the modern name Bronx. The standard English form is now the Bronx, with a capital B and usually the definite article.
