canker はつづりが cancer にかなり近いので、まず「組織をじわじわ傷める語」という共通イメージで引っかけると残りやすいです。ただし意味は cancer そのものではなく、「潰瘍・ただれ」。植物なら幹や枝にできる病気、人体なら canker sore で口内炎を指すことが多いです。単独で見たら「潰瘍性の傷み」、sore が続いたら口、園芸・農業の文脈なら木、と使用場面で分けて覚えると混同しにくくなります。

canker は古フランス語 cancre を経て、ラテン語 cancer「カニ」にさかのぼる語です。広がる潰瘍の形がカニの脚のようだと見なされ、「かいよう・腐食」の意味になりました。関連語は cancer と chancre です。
Canker came into English through Old French cancre, from Latin cancer, which meant both "crab" and a spreading sore. The image was that the sore spread like a crab’s legs. The same Latin root also gave English cancer and chancre.
