canker は古フランス語 cancre を経て、ラテン語 cancer「カニ」にさかのぼる語です。広がる潰瘍の形がカニの脚のようだと見なされ、「かいよう・腐食」の意味になりました。関連語は cancer と chancre です。
Canker came into English through Old French cancre, from Latin cancer, which meant both "crab" and a spreading sore. The image was that the sore spread like a crab’s legs. The same Latin root also gave English cancer and chancre.
