A catch-22 is a situation where you cannot succeed because the rules or conditions block each other. Whatever you do, you stay trapped in the same problem. It is often used for no-win situations in work, government, or daily life.

catch は『つかまえる』なので、catch-22 は『どちらを選んでも結局つかまる』場面として覚えると残りやすいです。単なる difficult choice ではなく、『AするにはBが必要、でもBするにはAが必要』という出口なしの条件ループが核。たとえば experience がないと採用されず、採用されないと experience が増えない、の型です。dilemma よりも、制度・規則・条件の矛盾で身動きできないニュアンスが強く、be in a catch-22 の形でも見ます。
Think of a `catch-22` as a trap made by two rules that block each other. You need A to get B, but you need B to get A, so there is no clean way forward. It is more specific than a general `dilemma` because the problem comes from the system or conditions.

Catch-22 はジョセフ・ヘラーの1961年小説名から広まった表現。catch は古フランス語経由でラテン語 captare「つかむ」にさかのぼり、ここでは「抜け出せない罠」の意。capture や chase と根が近く、「つかまる矛盾」と考えると腑に落ちる。
Catch-22 comes from the title of Joseph Heller's 1961 novel Catch-22. Catch is an old word meaning "seize" or "trap," related at a distance to words like capture. After the novel, the title became a general term for a no-win situation where the rules trap you in a contradiction.
