解説 Definition
華やかな大きい花を咲かせ、香りのよいものもあるラン「カトレア」です。主に中米・南米の熱帯地域に自生し、園芸でも親しまれています。

19世紀英国の園芸家 William Cattley の名に由来する固有名詞。彼がブラジル産のこのランを初めて栽培・開花させた功績を称え、植物学者リンドリーが命名。Cattley の姓は古英語の地名「牛の牧草地」に遡る。
The genus Cattleya was named in the nineteenth century by botanist John Lindley in honor of English horticulturist William Cattley. Cattley successfully cultivated and flowered a Brazilian orchid that Lindley described. The botanical name was formed from his surname with the conventional Latinized ending -a. The surname itself has been associated with English place-name elements referring to cattle and a clearing or pasture.
