orchid の語源・成り立ち Etymology
orchid はギリシャ語 orkhis「睾丸」が語源で、球根の形がそれに似るため植物名になった。語根 orchid- は cryptorchid「停留精巣」や orchitis「精巣炎」と同根で、花の優雅さとは逆に“地下の球根の形”が名づけの決め手だったと見える。
Orchid comes from Greek orkhis, meaning "testicle." The name was given because the plant's underground tubers were thought to look like that shape. So the word began from the form of the root, not the flower, and it is related to medical terms like orchitis and cryptorchid.
