orchard は古英語 ortgeard に由来し、ort「植物・草木」と geard「囲われた場所」からできています。つまり本来は「木や草を植えた囲い地」で、そこから果樹園の意味になりました。関連語に yard、garden があります。
Orchard comes from Old English ortgeard, made from ort meaning "plant" or "vegetable" and geard meaning "enclosed yard." So it originally meant a fenced place where plants were grown.
