解説 Definition
Cetus は、天の赤道付近に広がる大きな星座「くじら座」です。ギリシャ神話の海の怪物を表す星座で、英語では the Whale とも呼ばれます。
A large constellation lying mainly near the celestial equator and traditionally representing the sea monster of Greek mythology. It is commonly called the Whale in English and contains notable stars including Mira.

Cetus is the Latin form of Greek kētos, a word for a huge sea creature or sea monster. In Greek mythology, such a monster was sent to attack Andromeda, and the figure was represented as a constellation. The same ancient root is reflected in cetacean, the English zoological term for a member of the whale group. The constellation’s conventional English title, the Whale, narrows the older meaning.
