channeling は channel に -ing が付いた語で、channel は古フランス語 chanel、さらにラテン語 canalis「水路・管」へさかのぼります。もとは水や物を通す「通り道」の発想なので、感情や情報や力を一定方向へ導く・伝える意味になったと見ると自然で、canal も同根です。
Channeling is formed from the verb channel and the suffix -ing. Channel entered English through Old French chanel, ultimately from Latin canalis, meaning a pipe, groove, or watercourse. The physical idea of providing a route for water or another substance later developed into the figurative sense of directing emotion, energy, information, or resources. Canal is historically related. The spiritual sense applies the same idea to transmitting an alleged message through a person.
