フランス語由来で、ラテン語の「caballus（馬）」が語根です。中世は騎馬戦が武勇の象徴だったため、「馬に関わる者」から転じて「騎士」を指すようになりました。同じ語根を持つ言葉にcavalierやchivalryがあります。
English borrowed chevalier from French, in which it denotes a knight or mounted warrior. It developed from Late Latin caballarius, “horseman,” based on caballus, “horse.” Because medieval warriors of knightly rank characteristically fought on horseback, the term for a horseman became a title for a knight. Cavalier and chivalry belong to the same broad word family, although their forms reached English through different stages of French.
