騎士道
解説 Definition
騎士道とは、中世の騎士が守るべき倫理的な価値観と行動規範の体系です。勇敢さ、名誉、礼節、弱者への配慮などを含みます。
Chivalry originally meant the ideals and behavior expected of medieval knights, such as bravery, honor, and loyalty. In modern use, it can also mean polite and respectful behavior, especially toward women. This modern meaning can sound old-fashioned depending on context.

chivalry は古フランス語 chevalerie から入り、chevalier「騎士」に由来し、その奥には後期ラテン語 caballarius「馬の人」があります。語根は caballus「馬」で、まず「騎士の身分・軍人の集団」を表し、そこから騎士に期待される高潔な行動規範、つまり騎士道の意味へ広がりました。関連語に chevalier, cavalry があります。
Chivalry came from Old French chevalerie, based on chevalier, "knight." That goes back to Late Latin caballarius, literally "horseman," from caballus, "horse." The word first referred to knights as a social or military group, then later to the noble behavior expected from them; related words include chevalier and cavalry.
