解説 Definition
教会に隣接する敷地や庭を指し、とくに墓地として使われている場所をいうことが多い語。歴史的には教会の周囲に墓石や埋葬地が設けられている場合が多く、英語ではその意味で使われることが一般的である。
A churchyard is the land around a church. In many places, it also includes a cemetery where people are buried. The word is mostly used for traditional churches and their surrounding grounds.

churchyardは church＋yard から成る複合語。church は古英語 cirice を経てギリシャ語 kyriakon「主の家」に、yard は古英語 geard「囲い地」にさかのぼるので、字義どおり「教会を囲む庭」で、church や garden に同じ語根が見える。
Churchyard is a compound of church and yard. Church comes from Old English cirice and ultimately from Greek kyriakon, meaning "the Lord's house," while yard comes from Old English geard, meaning an enclosed area. So the original sense was simply the enclosed ground around a church. The same old root as yard also appears in garden.
