wormhole は worm（虫）+ hole（穴）の複合語で、どちらも古英語系です。worm は古英語 wyrm、hole は hol にさかのぼり、hole と同根の hollow も同じ「空洞」の感覚を持ちます。もとは虫食い穴で、時空を近道する意味も「内部を貫く抜け道」の比喩だと分かります。
