Chipmunk developed from earlier English spellings such as chitmunk and is generally traced to an Algonquian language, probably an Ojibwe word used for a red squirrel or similar small rodent. English speakers reshaped the unfamiliar borrowed form into its modern spelling, but the word is not historically composed of chip and monk. It entered English as the local name of a North American animal and later became the standard common name for members of this striped squirrel group.
