circumflex はラテン語 circumflexus に由来し、circum-「周りに」+ flectere「曲げる」からできています。文字の上で線が折れ曲がる形を「ぐるりと曲げたもの」と見た語で、記号名にその姿が写っています。同じ語根を持つ語に inflect、flexible があります。
