Usually `envious` describes the feeling, but in older or rarer English it can describe the thing that causes that feeling. Think of `an envious position` or `an envious advantage` as something other people would envy. If that feels strange, compare it with the more common modern word `enviable`.

envious は envy + -ous から成り、envy は古フランス語を経てラテン語 invidia にさかのぼります。in-（…に向けて）+ videre（見る）が核で、video や evidence と同じ「見る」の語根です。ねたみが「相手を敵意まじりに見ること」だと分かると、この語の陰りがよく見えます。
Envious comes from envy + -ous. Envy came through Old French from Latin invidia, from in- and videre, "to see." The original idea is close to looking at someone with ill feeling, and the same root appears in English words like video and evidence.
