線や形がまっすぐではなく、くねくねと曲がっている様子を表す形容詞。手書きの文字、道、模様などが不規則にうねって見えるときに使われ、整っていない見た目や読みづらさを含意することが多い。

近代英語の squiggle に形容詞語尾 -y が付いた語で、squiggle 自体は squirm と wriggle が混ざって生まれた口語です。後者 wriggle は中低地ドイツ語系の「身をよじる」にさかのぼり、線がくねくね波打つ感じがそのまま squiggly の意味になります。
