ギリシャ語 klinikos（寝台の）から。klinē（寝台・ベッド）が語源で、古代ギリシャでは病人の寝台のそばで行う医療を指した。関連語：incline（傾く＝寝台に横たわる姿勢）、recline（もたれかかる）。「ベッドサイドの医療」が原義で、小規模な診療所を意味するようになった。
