Cohere means to form a connected whole or to stay together in a clear and logical way. It is often used for ideas, arguments, stories, or groups of things that fit well together. If something does not cohere, it feels confusing, disconnected, or inconsistent.

cohere は co-「共に」+ here の核であるラテン語 haerere「くっつく」から成ります。原義は「一緒にくっつく」で、そこから「筋が通って一致する」という意味になりました。関連語に adhere, inherent があり、“離れず結びつく”感覚が共通しています。
Cohere comes from Latin cohaerere, made from co- "together" and haerere "to stick." Its earliest sense was literally "stick together." From there it developed a more abstract meaning, "hold together logically or consistently," and it is related to adhere and inherent.
