conceit は古フランス語経由でラテン語 concipere「取り込む・心に抱く」にさかのぼり、con-「共に」+ capere「取る」に分けられます。もとは「考え・着想」でしたが、「自分について抱く考え」が強まり「うぬぼれ」へ発展しました。関連語は conceive, concept です。
