Conceit is too much pride in yourself, especially in your appearance, abilities, or importance. It is usually used in a negative way to describe an attitude of self-admiration. In literature, it can also mean a clever or unusual idea, but that meaning is less common.

conceit は古フランス語経由でラテン語 concipere「取り込む・心に抱く」にさかのぼり、con-「共に」+ capere「取る」に分けられます。もとは「考え・着想」でしたが、「自分について抱く考え」が強まり「うぬぼれ」へ発展しました。関連語は conceive, concept です。
