The conjunctiva is the thin, clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. This is a medical word often used when talking about eye health, irritation, or infection.

Conjunctiva comes from Latin conjunctiva, meaning "that which joins together." It is related to con- "together" and jungere or junct- "to join," the same root seen in join and junction. The word was used for the membrane because it connects the eyelid and the eyeball.
