arrowroot はカリブ海のアラワク語 araru / araruta に由来するとされ、英語で arrow「矢」+ root「根」に引き寄せられて今の形になった。arrowhead や rootlet と同じ見慣れた要素に分かれるため、「矢毒の傷に効く根」という理解が意味を後押しした語だ。
