A connective is something that joins or links things together. In grammar, it usually means a word or phrase that connects ideas, clauses, or sentences, such as a linking word. In technical contexts, it can also refer more generally to a connecting part or structure.

connective はラテン語 connectere に由来し、con-「共に」+ nectere「結ぶ」から成ります。connection や nexus と同根で、「別々のものを結んで橋渡しするもの」だから接続語や結合組織を指すのだと分かります。
Connective comes from Latin connectere, built from con- "together" and nectere "to bind or tie." It entered English with the sense of something that links separate things. That idea of binding together is also seen in related words such as connection and nexus.
