coptic の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語の「エジプト」由来でアラビア語を経た「Copt」と、形容詞化の接尾辞「-ic」から成ります。本来はエジプト人を指しましたが、後に同地の初期キリスト教一派を限定して指すようになりました。同語根に「Egypt(エジプト)」があります。
Coptic is formed from Copt and the adjective suffix -ic. Copt reached English through Arabic qibṭ or qubṭ, from Greek Aigyptios, meaning “Egyptian.” The Greek word is also historically related to the name Egypt. The term once had a broader reference to Egyptians but became especially associated with Egypt’s native Christian population, their churches, and their language. Coptic therefore preserves an old linguistic form of the country’s name.
