ラテン語 cortex（樹皮・外皮）に由来し、副腎皮質（adrenal cortex）から分泌されるホルモンであることから命名。接尾辞 -one はケトン系化合物を示す。関連語: cortex（皮質）、cortical（皮質の）。「外皮」が臓器の外層を指すようになった。
The name cortisone is built on cortis-, associated with the adrenal cortex, plus the chemical ending -one, used in names of compounds containing a ketone group. Cortex is Latin for “bark” or “outer layer” and became an anatomical term for the outer region of an organ.
