A courthouse is the building where legal trials and other court activities happen. It may also contain offices for judges, lawyers, and court workers.

court はまず court case, court order などの「裁判・法廷」の文脈で押さえると、courthouse は「裁判を扱う建物」だと自然に読めます。house が付くので courtroom（法廷という1部屋）より広く、judge や lawyer、clerk が働く施設全体を指すと整理すると定着しやすいです。go to the courthouse, appear at the courthouse の形で出やすい一方、sport の court もあるので、legal な語が近くにあれば裁判側の意味に切り替えるのがコツです。

courthouse は court + house の複合語で、文字通り「法廷の建物」です。court は古フランス語経由でラテン語 cohors「囲われた庭・集まる場所」にさかのぼるため、人が集まり裁きを行う場という発想が残っており、courtroom, courtyard が関連語です。
