crept の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 crēopan(這う、忍び寄る)が起源で、ゲルマン祖語 *kreupaną に遡る。「低い姿勢でゆっくり動く」が原義。関連語:creep(忍び寄る)、creepy(不気味な)。地を這うような動きから、気づかれずに近づくニュアンスが生まれた。

Crept is the inherited past tense and past participle of creep. Creep comes from Old English crēopan, “to crawl or move close to the ground,” and is related to other Germanic words for crawling. The early image of low, slow movement developed naturally into the senses of approaching quietly and spreading gradually. The vowel change in creep–crept marks an old irregular pattern rather than regular -ed formation.
