criticalはギリシャ語kritikos（判断する）からラテン語criticus経由で英語に入った。語根krinein（分ける・判断する）が元で、crisis（危機＝判断の分かれ目）やcriterion（基準）と同根。「分けて判断する」が原義なので、of以下を吟味し評価する＝批判的という意味になる。
