クルージング
解説 Definition
「cruising」は、ゆっくりとした速度で船や車などで移動することを指し、特に楽しみのためにのんびりと旅することを意味します。船旅の場合はクルーズ旅行を指し、複数の寄港地を巡る旅行形態を表します。また、車でゆっくり流して走る行為にも使われます。
The activity of traveling at a relaxed or steady speed, especially by ship for pleasure or by car without a pressing destination. It may involve visiting several ports or simply moving around leisurely.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形cruise「巡航する、のんびり走る」に-ingを付ける際、語末のeを落としてcruisingとなる。名詞なら「楽しみながら船や車で移動すること」。「go cruising」「cruising around the islands」のように、急いで目的地へ直行せず、一定の速さで巡る場面と結び付ける。
Link cruising to its base verb cruise. Drop the final e of cruise before adding -ing: cruise becomes cruising. As a noun, it names relaxed or steady travel, especially a pleasure trip by ship or an unhurried drive. Picture a vessel moving among Caribbean islands or friends cruising along a highway with no fixed destination. Common patterns include go cruising, cruising around the islands, and ocean cruising. The key contrast is with traveling mainly to arrive quickly: cruising emphasizes the journey, steady movement, or enjoyment itself.

cruising の語源・成り立ち Etymology
オランダ語 kruisen(十字に横切る)が語源で、kruis(十字)から派生。大航海時代に船が海上を縦横に行き来する航行を指した。関連語: cross(十字)、cruise(巡航する)。十字を切るように海を横断する船旅のイメージが、現在の「巡航・遊覧航海」の意味につながった。
Cruising is the -ing form and verbal noun of cruise, created by dropping the final e before adding -ing. Cruise entered English through Dutch kruisen, “to cross” or “sail back and forth,” from kruis, “cross.” It first referred to ships ranging across an area, including on patrol. The meaning later broadened to steady travel and, especially, recreational voyages that may call at several ports.
