cuboid は cube「立方体」に、ギリシャ語由来の接尾辞 -oid「〜の形をした」が付いた語です。cube はラテン語 cubus、さらにギリシャ語 kybos に遡り、「立方体のような形」から直方体を表します。関連語は cubic, cubical.
