Defibrillation is a medical treatment that uses an electric shock to try to restore a normal heartbeat. It is used in emergencies when the heart is beating in a very dangerous way or has stopped working properly. The term is mainly used in medical contexts.

まず defibrillator（除細動器、AED）を知っていると覚えやすい語です。-tion は「行為・処置」を表すので、defibrillation は「defibrillator で行う処置」とつなげると定着します。de- は「解除・取り除く」の型で、deactivate などと同じく“異常状態をほどいて元に戻す”感覚。医療では ventricular fibrillation（心室細動）に対して perform defibrillation の形でよく出ます。CPR は押してつなぐ処置、defibrillation は電気でリズムを立て直す処置、と役割を分けて覚えると混同しません。

The ending `-tion` turns it into the action or procedure, so `defibrillation` is the treatment done with a defibrillator. It often appears with `perform defibrillation`. defibrillation は de-「取り除く」と fibrillation「細かな線維状の震え」から成る語です。fibrillation はラテン語 fibra「繊維」にさかのぼり、心筋がばらばらに震える状態を表すので、「その震えを止める」から除細動の意味になりました。関連語は fiber, fibril。
Defibrillation combines de-, meaning removal or reversal, with fibrillation. Fibrillation comes from Latin fibra, "fiber," and referred to a twitching movement of muscle fibers. The word therefore means stopping or reversing that irregular fiber-like trembling, especially in the heart.
