心室細動などの致死的な不整脈に対して、電気ショックを与えて心臓のリズムを正常化しようとする医療処置です。単なる不規則な心拍すべてではなく、緊急性の高い特定の不整脈に使われる処置です。
Defibrillation is a medical treatment that uses an electric shock to try to restore a normal heartbeat. It is used in emergencies when the heart is beating in a very dangerous way or has stopped working properly. The term is mainly used in medical contexts.

defibrillation は de-「取り除く」と fibrillation「細かな線維状の震え」から成る語です。fibrillation はラテン語 fibra「繊維」にさかのぼり、心筋がばらばらに震える状態を表すので、「その震えを止める」から除細動の意味になりました。関連語は fiber, fibril。
Defibrillation combines de-, meaning removal or reversal, with fibrillation. Fibrillation comes from Latin fibra, "fiber," and referred to a twitching movement of muscle fibers. The word therefore means stopping or reversing that irregular fiber-like trembling, especially in the heart.
