解説 Definition
窓や舞台などに掛けるカーテン、幕という意味です。日本語の「カーテン」とほぼ同じですが、劇場の幕や仕切りの布にも使われます。
A curtain is a piece of cloth or similar material hung to cover a window, divide a space, or hide a stage. It can be opened or closed by moving or raising it.

ラテン語 cortina（囲い、大釜）が古フランス語 courtine を経て英語に入った。もとは城壁の間をつなぐ幕の意味。court（宮廷・中庭）とも関連し、「空間を仕切るもの」という核心的イメージがある。
Curtain entered Middle English through Old French cortine or courtine, ultimately from Late Latin cortina. Earlier senses referred to an enclosing or hanging barrier, and the word was also used for a section of defensive wall between two towers. Its history therefore supports the modern image of something extended across a space to cover, separate, or screen it.
