A cyclotron is a machine that uses magnetic and electric fields to make charged particles move in a circle at high speed. It is used in physics and medicine, especially for scientific research and for producing certain medical materials.

`Cyclotron` is a modern scientific coinage from `cyclo-` and `-tron`. `Cyclo-` comes from Greek `kyklos`, meaning "circle" or "wheel," seen also in `cycle` and `bicycle`. The name was chosen because the machine makes charged particles move in a circular path while they are accelerated, so the form of the motion is built into the word.
