daffodil は中世ラテン語 asphodelus、さらにギリシャ語 asphodelos に由来する花名です。接頭辞よりも音変化の語で、古形 affodil が英語の中で崩れて daffodil になりました。関連語に asphodel があり、別名から今の「水仙」の名へつながります。
Daffodil ultimately goes back to Medieval Latin asphodelus, from Greek asphodelos, the name of a flower. In English, an older form like affodil changed in sound over time and became daffodil. It is related to the English flower name asphodel.
