To daunt means to make someone feel less confident, brave, or willing to act because something seems difficult or frightening. It is often used when a challenge or danger causes hesitation.

daunt は単独で覚えるより、daunting「気後れするほど大変な」と dauntless「ひるまない」を一緒に押さえると定着しやすい。語尾 -less は「〜がない」なので、dauntless から逆に daunt の意味を思い出せる。核になる感覚は scare より一段重く、「相手の威圧や課題の大きさにのみ込まれて勇気がしぼむ」。be daunted by a challenge / not be daunted by criticism が典型。intimidate は人に威圧される感じ、daunt は人でも状況でも気力をくじける点が違う。
`Daunt` is easier to remember with `daunting` and `dauntless`. If `dauntless` means not losing courage, then `daunt` must mean making someone lose courage. Think of a challenge so big that it weakens your confidence, not just a simple scare.
