deadline は dead と line から成る語で、line はラテン語 linea 由来、dead は古英語 dead にさかのぼります。もとは越えると撃たれて死ぬ監獄の「死線」で、そこから比喩的に「これを越えると終わり」の締め切りになりました。関連語は deadly, outline。
Deadline is a compound of dead and line. It first meant a literal prison line that a prisoner must not cross, or they could be shot dead. Later the sense became figurative: a line in time that must not be passed.
