decking の語源・成り立ち Etymology
decking は deck+接尾辞 -ing の名詞で、deck は中世オランダ語 dec「覆い・屋根」にさかのぼり、dekken「覆う」と同系です。もとは「上を覆う板」の感覚から甲板や床板を表し、deck や thatch が近い仲間です。
Decking is formed from deck and the noun-forming -ing ending. Deck entered English from Middle Dutch dec, meaning a covering or roof, and is related to Dutch dekken, “to cover.” The word first carried the idea of a covering made over a structure and later referred to a ship’s horizontal platform and similar floor surfaces. Decking consequently came to denote the boards or material used to create such a surface.
