deflationary は deflation「収縮・デフレ」+ 形容詞語尾 -ary。deflation はラテン語 de-「下へ・除いて」+ flare「吹く」に由来し、inflate, inflation と同根です。空気が抜けてしぼむイメージから、物価や景気が縮む「デフレ的な」になりました。
Deflationary comes from deflation plus the adjective ending -ary. Deflation comes through Latin from de- "down, away" and flare "to blow," the same root seen in inflate and inflation. The idea is of air being let out and something shrinking, which later developed into the economic sense of falling prices or contraction.
