古フランス語 deputé（任命された者）から。ラテン語 dēputāre（de- 離れて + putāre 考える・刈り込む）が語源で、原義は「割り当てる」。関連語: depute, dispute。「上位者から権限を割り当てられた人」→「代理・副官」の意味になった。
Deputy came from Old French deputé, meaning someone appointed to a role, and goes back to Latin deputare. That Latin verb originally meant "assign" or "set apart." From the idea of a person given a task or authority, deputy came to mean someone acting for a higher official or in another person's place.
