解説 Definition
dictating は dictate「口述する・書き取らせる」の現在分詞・動名詞です。手紙やメモなどの内容を声に出し、別の人や機器に書き取らせたり記録させたりする動作を表します。

ラテン語 dicere（言う）由来の語根 dict- に接尾辞-ing が付きます。文字通り『口頭で発した言葉を書き取る』行為を示すため、「口述筆記」という意味に直結しており語源が明確です。同根語に dictionary（辞書）と contradict（矛盾する）があります。
Dictating is formed from dictate plus the suffix -ing, with the final e removed. Dictate came from Latin dictare, “to say repeatedly, prescribe, or compose aloud,” an intensive form related to dicere, “to say.” Its dict- element appears in many English words involving saying or stated language, including diction, dictionary, and contradict. The oral-writing sense developed directly from speaking words for another person to copy and now also applies to speech entered into electronic recording or transcription systems.
