使い方 Usage

  • differentiating A from B は「AとBを区別する」。facts from opinions「事実と意見」のように対象を示します。 Use differentiating A from B to name the things being distinguished, as in differentiating facts from opinions.
  • differentiating between A and B でも、区別する二つの対象を示せます。 Differentiating between A and B also names the two things being distinguished.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

different「異なる」から、differentiate「違いを見分けて区別する」へつなげて覚えます。語末の e を取って -ing を付けた形が differentiating です。

Connect different with differentiate: identify differences to tell things apart. Drop the final silent e of differentiate and add -ing to form differentiating.

differentiating の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語のdifferre(接頭辞dis「離れて」+ 語根ferre「運ぶ」)に由来します。元々「物を離して別々に運ぶ」イメージから、対象の特徴を分けて見極め「区別する」という意味に発展しました。同語根を持つ単語にdifference(違い)やtransfer(移動する)があります。

Differentiating is formed from differentiate by dropping its final silent e and adding -ing. Differentiate was built from Medieval Latin differentia, meaning “difference,” which is related to Latin differre, “to carry apart” or “to differ.” Differre combines dis-, expressing separation, with ferre, “to carry.” The historical image of things being carried apart developed into the modern idea of recognizing or creating distinctions between them.
