解説 Definition

directed は direct(指示する、導く)の過去形・過去分詞です。「指示された」という受け身の意味や、「指示した」という過去の動作を表すときに使います。

Directed is the past-tense and past-participle form of direct. It indicates that someone gave instructions, guided a person toward a place, or aimed a message, question, or action at a particular recipient or purpose.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

directed は direct に規則変化の -ed を付けた過去形・過去分詞です。direct は「方向を示す」が核で、direct someone to a room なら部屋へ案内し、be directed to wait なら待つよう指示される、questions directed to a manager なら質問をその人へ向ける、と覚えます。

Think of direct as giving something a direction. A staff member directed us to a room by showing where to go; a manager directed employees to wait by telling them what to do; and questions directed to the manager are aimed at that recipient. Directed is the regular past and past-participle form, made by adding -ed. In ordinary pronunciation, its ending is a separate syllable, /ɪd/, because direct ends in a /t/ sound. This links the spelling, grammar, and idea of guidance.

例文

directed の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 dirigere(まっすぐにする)から。dis-(離れて)+ regere(導く・支配する)の合成語で、古仏語 directer を経て英語に。「正しい方向へ導く」が原義で、指示・監督の意味に発展。関連語: director(監督)、direction(方向)。

Directed is formed regularly from direct plus -ed. Direct came into English through French and Latin, ultimately from Latin dirigere, meaning to set straight, arrange, or guide. That verb combines a prefix related to separation or distinct movement with regere, “to guide” or “to rule.” The underlying idea of setting a straight course developed into the modern senses of guiding, instructing, managing, and aiming something toward a recipient.
